Woman’s vertebrae cracked in assault
A man who cracked a woman’s vertebrae during a vicious domestic assault has admitted a charge of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm and is in custody for sentencing next month.
Russell Alan Moa, 47, who runs a Christchurch business, has now admitted kicking the woman repeatedly in the back and stomping on her head in the July 20 assault.
Christchurch District Court Judge David Saunder remanded him for sentencing on October 17. Moa is asking to meet the victim at a restorative justice conference before the sentencing takes place.
The Crown said Moa had been in a relationship with the woman for about three months when they argued and parted. Moa asked her to move out, but on July 20 he phoned her and asked her to come home. The woman thought he wanted to talk to her.
When she arrived, Moa slapped her and when she fell her head struck the metal handle of a duchess causing a large gash to right side of her forehead. Moa then straddled her and strangled her until she had trouble breathing.
While she was on the floor he repeatedly kicked her and stomped on her head. “I’m going to put you in a hole,” he told her.
She could not move to get away. Moa put her in a shower and cleaned her up before helping her back to the bedroom and placing her on the bed. He then told someone else at the Sockburn house, “I’ve hurt her bad.” That person phoned for an ambulance after seeing the injuries.
The woman had a severe gash to the right side of her forehead, fractures to her ribs and vertebrae, and extensive swelling to her back, chest, neck, and arms, said Crown prosecutor Nicola Pointer.
