Robbery was motive for attack on sex worker

Court House-general2The Crown concedes that an attack on a sex-worker was an assault with the intent to rob her, rather than a sexual assault.

Connor Steven James Galloway, a 20-year-old kitchen hand, had originally been charged with assaulting the woman with intent to commit sexual violation.

But five months after the assault, the Crown today amended the charge to assault with intent to rob, and Galloway pleaded guilty to the new charge in the Christchurch District Court.

Early in the morning of May 2, the woman was assaulted in Cambridge Green, near the intersection of Barbadoes and Salisbury Streets. She received minor injuries.

Judge Jane Farish read Galloway the first strike warning for violent offenders and remanded him on bail to November 26 for sentencing.

She ordered a pre-sentence report, a health assessor’s report, and an up-to-date victim impact report.
