20-year-old admits car-chase charges
Police have dropped a charge of assaulting a woman police officer by using a car as a weapon after she was injured when her patrol car was sideswiped by a 20-year-old driver.
After police withdrew the charge of assault with a weapon, the driver then admitted 11 other charges in the Christchurch District Court today.
Dominic Joseph Sullivan was arrested after a car-chase on October 7 when he drove off while police were checking registration details at a Moorhouse Avenue service station.
He drove onto the Southern Motorway off Brougham Street, but was caught when the car went out of control down a bank where he was arrested.
A patrol car was damaged and a police officer received minor injuries to her arm during the chase.
Sullivan today admitted failing to stay stopped for the police check, driving while forbidden, reckless driving, failing to stop for police, having tools for unlawfully taking cars, and possession of a pipe for smoking methamphetamine, plus other charges.
Sullivan was remanded in custody by Judge Brian Callaghan to December 1 for sentencing. He ordered a pre-sentence report, and Sullivan’s defence counsel, Donald Matthews, said he would be applying for electronically monitored bail before that date.
