Court House-Sept-2013-05An escapee who allegedly did a runner out the window while having hospital treatment has been recaptured after 33 months on the run.

A charge of escaping from custody was one of 36 charges faced by Neil Joseph Anderson, 48, at his appearance before Judge Alistair Garland in the Christchurch District Court today.

He remanded Anderson in custody for an appearance by video-link from Christchurch Men’s Prison on December 11.

Anderson was remanded without plea on charges of escaping custody, burglary, unlawfully taking cars, theft, causing loss or damage, disqualified driving, failing to answer his bail, being unlawfully in a building, and driving while his licence was revoked.

Anderson was in custody in February 2012 on charges of theft and intentional damage in relation to the removal of brass plaques from Waikumete Cemetery in West Auckland in October 2011.

He complained of chest pains after his arrest and was taken to Christchurch Hospital. Police alleged he still had an expensive heart monitor attached when he jumped out a window and made off into Hagley Park.

The surgical gown he was wearing was later found in the park.

Police later speculated that he had been in various locations in the North and South Islands and was continuing to move around. Several sightings were reported but none had been verified.
