Police car-Sept2013-01A man alleged to have transported a woman charged with being a drugs mule in a police chase incident  on November 24 is denying all charges.

Police say the incident began after Graham Theo Payne, 55, picked up the woman from Christchurch Airport, and ended with crashes that caused injuries to six people in Yaldhurst Road.

Payne was refused bail at a hearing in the Christchurch District Court today.

He pleaded not guilty to wounding a police officer with intent to avoid arrest, two charges of reckless driving causing injury, and failing to stop for police.

Defence counsel Rupert Glover applied for bail but police opposed it, and Judge Tony Couch remanded Payne in custody for a case review hearing on March 2.

It is alleged Payne picked the woman up, then failed to stop for a police vehicle using its lights and siren. The charges relate to a police officer who was injured when the car allegedly crashed through a police road block, and the injuries to the passengers in his car.

The fleeing car also crashed into another vehicle on Yaldhurst Road causing injury to three elderly people.
