Charges denied over Linwood brawl
A 20-year-old man denies three charges arising from a violent incident with police outside a children’s birthday party in Carnarvon Street, Linwood, three weeks ago.
Bail was refused again today for Perenura Hurinui, at a Christchurch District Court hearing before Judge Emma Smith.
It was refused on December 1, but unusually, the judge allowed that it could be reconsidered on Hurinui’s next appearance. Hurinui has a one-year-old child, and another child is expected early next year.
Judge Smith today heard submissions and then decided that Hurinui would again be remanded in custody to a case review hearing on February 24, after he pleaded not guilty and elected a judge-alone trial.
He denies charges of assault with intent to injure, assaulting the police, and disorderly behaviour.
He was one of six men charged over the brawl in which three police were injured – including one knocked unconscious – and there was an alleged attempt to strangle a police dog.
