Bail granted after car chase
A 25-year-old who allegedly led police on an 18-minute car chase through Waltham, Opawa, and Beckenham, was granted bail when he appeared in the Christchurch District Court today.
Ben James Te Wera Kingi was charged with failing to stop for a police car using its flashing lights, operating a car recklessly on Eastern Terrace, drink-driving, driving while his licence was suspended, resisting police, and possession of cannabis.
Judge Raoul Neave remanded Kingi on bail without plea to January 22.
The alleged pursuit on January 11 saw the vehicle reach speeds of up to 100kmh in a 50kmh zone, and ended when the car got a flat tyre.
