A 21-year-old mother is facing a likely jail term after admitting stealing laptops from Christchurch Hospital and offering to sell the computers and synthetic cannabis on Facebook.Court House-Sept-2013-05

Kanesha Te Whata, unemployed, was doing a sentence of community detention at the time. That sentence has now been cancelled after an application at the Christchurch District Court today.

Her young daughter was at the Court House in the care of family when she made her appearance by video-link from the prison.

Judge Alistair Garland indicated that he thought a jail sentence was likely as he remanded Te Whata in custody for sentence on March 11. He asked for a pre-sentence report.

She pleaded guilty to charges of receiving stolen property, theft, and offering to supply an unapproved product – synthetic cannabis.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Dave Murray said Te Whata offered to sell on Facebook a distinctive  Aspirin-style set of silver cuff-links which had been stolen in a Christchurch house burglary.

She also posted on her personal Facebook account a message offering to sell “fine cut syn…mean smoke”. People would be allowed to try before they purchased. Sergeant Murray said “syn” commonly referred to synthetic cannabis.

On November 29, she was with an associate at Christchurch Hospital, visiting another associate, when she walked through the staff administration area. She saw no-one was about and stole three laptop computers by hiding them under her clothing. They were worth $3600. Te Whata tried to sell one on Facebook.

Police want her to pay $3690 for the laptops and cuff-links which were not recovered.

Te Whata said she committed the Facebook-related offences because she was bored.
