Man says he ‘felt sick’ after armed robbery
A 36-year-old told police he felt sick after committing the knife-point robbery of the Phillipstown Post Shop and Pharmacy.
The man, Damian Aaron Anderson, was charged in December with the October 3 robbery. In the meantime he has been sentenced for other offending and has begun serving a separate prison term.
Anderson appeared by video-link from Christchurch Men’s Prison at the Christchurch District Court today and pleaded guilty to the charge of armed robbery.
Judge Alistair Garland remanded remanded him in custody for Crown sentencing on March 25. He asked for a pre-sentence report and for a restorative justice conference to be held during the remand.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Dave Murray said the robbery took place about 12.50pm on October 3 when Anderson parked his car near the corner of Ferry Road and Wilsons Road and took a knife out of the car’s boot and tucked it into his trousers. He was wearing a hooded top and a red and black bush shirt, with dark sunglasses.
He walked into the pharmacy, Postshop, and Kiwibank on Ferry Road and went up to a teller’s desk.
“The lone female teller greeted him and he pulled a long knife up from his right side and placed it on the countertop with the blade pointing towards the teller,” said Sergeant Murray. “As he put the knife down and held it there, he said, ‘Give me all your money. I have to do this.’ ”
He told the woman to hurry up as she was removing the cash from the till. She handed him the $785 and he placed it in a pocket. He kept his hand on the knife the whole time, and then hid it and walked quickly out of the shop.
When police questioned Anderson, he admitted the robbery. “He stated he was sorry for what he did and felt sick afterwards,” said Sergeant Murray.
Police are asking for an order for the repayment of the money, and they want the court to disqualify Anderson from driving because he used his car to commit the robbery.
