Stabbing in gang confrontation admitted

Police car-Sept2013-01A Woolston man has admitted a stabbing in an incident outside McDonalds in Linwood that added to fears of rising gang tensions in Christchurch.

Police said at the time that the two men involving in the August 10 incident were from rival gangs.

Nathan Anthony Whelan, 23, has admitted a charge of wounding with intent to injure and Christchurch District Court Judge Jane Farish remanded him on bail for sentencing on March 4.

She has asked for a pre-sentence report and a report on his suitability for a home detention sentence. Whelan was held in custody at his court appearance the day after the stabbing, but was eventually granted bail.

The incident took place about 9.30pm when the men encountered each other outside McDonalds at Eastgate.

The victim was abusive towards Whelan and threw a can of drink at him. In the fight that followed, Whelan punched and kicked the victim but then pulled out a small knife and used it to cause cuts behind the victim’s ear and and 1cm deep and 1cm wide wound on his back.

The victim needed stitches.
