Suppression continues for violation accused
Name suppression continues for a Christchurch man charged with drugging and sexually violating a male couch surfer.
In a reserved decision released in the Christchurch District Court today, the man was granted continued interim name suppression until his next appearance in court on March 30.
The submissions regarding suppression were heard on Monday.
The 35-year-old man is charged with stupefying and sexually violating a man in May, indecently assaulting another person in September, stealing a Cash Advance card worth $20, stealing a driver’s licence in October, and making an intimate visual recording.
Judge David Saunders said he would grant the order until a full medical assessment was obtained.
He amended the man’s bail conditions so that he is not to have any other person visiting or residing at his address without the prior written approval of a commissioned police officer, and he cannot undertake any work-related activity in which he provides counselling.
The couch surfing community is a global social networking service where travellers can get in contact with local people who offer a bed or couch for the night.
Judge Saunders remanded the man on bail to a case review hearing on March 30. The man is denying the charges.
