High Court-panoply1May 11 in Christchurch has been proposed for the start of the trial of Russell John Tully, accused of murder over the shooting of WINZ staff members in Ashburton last September.

The date was announced by Justice Cameron Mander at a pre-trial call-over in the High Court at Christchurch today. The judge suppressed almost all of the discussion at the session.

Crown prosecutor Brent Stanaway said Christchurch was seen as the likely venue for the trial and Justice Mander confirmed that administrative arrangements were being made for the trial to be held in the city.

Tully, 48, faces charges of murdering Peggy Noble, 67, and Leigh Cleveland, 55, who were shot dead in the Cass Street WINZ office in Ashburton about 9.50am on September 1.

He is accused of attempting to murder their colleague, Lindy Curtis, who was shot in the leg, and another staff member, Kim Adams, a mother-of-two who was allegedly fired at as she ran out the office’s back door.

Tully remains in custody.
