Appearance on Manawatu murder charge

Court House-doorwayA 41-year-old man charged with the murder of James Poto Whatuira at Woodville, near Palmerston North, has made an appearance in the Christchurch District Court.

The Nelson man was remanded in custody to the High Court in Palmerston North for a pre-trial call on March 16 when he appeared before Judge Tony Couch today.

At the request of defence counsel, Michael Knowles, Judge Couch granted a series of interim suppression orders which will eventually be considered by the High Court.

Mr Whatuira, 49, was found dead at a property in Ormond Street, Woodville, on January 4. Police said he had died from a single gunshot wound.

Police said three men from Dannevirke, aged 29, 35, and 45, were charged with being a party to murder and were to appear in the Palmerston North District Court today.
