French visitor admits bicycle crash
A French man in Christchurch on a one year work visa has admitted a charge of careless use of a vehicle – his bicycle – causing injury.
Cyril Millet, 24, was riding his bike on a footpath along Manchester Street when he hit the victim who was coming out of a doorway on February 16.
The victim was knocked to the ground, needed surgery for a fractured hip, and spent three days in hospital.
Millet told police that he did not see him.
Defence counsel Donald Dickson told the Christchurch District Court that Millet’s work visa would run out next January, but he was planning to fly home in May.
Judge Tony Couch expressed his surprise at the charge, which usually applies to car drivers, and was told by police that people causing injury on a bicycle, or even a skateboard, would face the same charge.
The police summary of facts said they were seeking a $600 reparation payment for associated costs.
Judge Couch remanded Millet on bail for sentencing on April 2, and referred him for a restorative justice meeting during the remand.
