New charges for shopping mall chase accused
The 30-year-old man arrested on weapon and kidnapping charges after a police chase ending at the Barrington Mall last month, faced three further charges at the Christchurch District Court today.
Albert Enoka was due to apply for electronically monitored bail, but his defence counsel Phil Shamy withdrew the application after reading Enoka’s reports prepared for the application.
The three new charges are possession of a firearm, removing an impounded car, and interfering with a vehicle.
Enoka pleaded not guilty to all charges and was remanded in custody by Judge Robert Murfitt to a case review hearing on May 18.
The original charges allege that on February 15, with a co-offender, he assaulted a man using a samurai sword as a weapon, wounded with intent to injure the same man, assaulted another man, unlawfully detained a woman, and committed burglary while armed with a knife.
Enoka was also charged that on February 16 he possessed methamphetamine and cannabis for supply.
Two men were allegedly pursued by police and ditched their car at the entrance of the Barrington Shopping Centre. One was arrested there, and the other later on Selwyn Street.
