WINZ office murder trial date set
May 11 has been confirmed as the trial date for Ashburton double-murder accused Russell John Tully.
The 48-year-old appeared by video-link from Christchurch Men’s Prison today for a High Court pre-trial call-over before Justice Cameron Mander.
He appeared with defence counsel Tony Greig in court. The proposed date for the trial in Christchurch was confirmed and Tully was further remanded in custody to another call-over on April 21.
Tully is accused of murdering Peggy Noble, 67, and Leigh Cleveland, 55, who were shot dead in the Cass Street WINZ office in Ashburton about 9.50am on September 1. He is accused of attempting to murder their colleague, Lindy Curtis, 43, who was shot in the leg, and another staff member, Kim Adams.
Adams, a mother-of-two, was allegedly shot at as she ran out the back door of the WINZ office with another colleague.
He is also charged with setting a trap or device – a length of steel wire fastened between two trees – that was likely to injure someone.
He is charged with possession of a pump action shotgun which police have not been able to find, a semi-automatic five-shot shotgun, and theft of a mountainbike, leather jacket, and grocery items.
