Serious drug charge laid after speeding stop
Police have laid a more serious drugs charge against a man already being held in custody on drugs and firearm charges.
Jamie Rangi Heron, 27, a painter-decorator and father-of-two, was arrested when he was stopped for speeding a month ago.
Police realised there were warrants out for his arrest and when the car was searched he was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of cannabis, and possession of a pistol and two warrants.
Police investigations have continued since his arrest.
Heron appeared in the Christchurch District Court by video-link from the prison yesterday, when police had laid an additional charge of possession of methamphetamine for supply.
Defence counsel Kirsten Gray told Judge Gary MacAskill that the seriousness of the new charge – it carries a maximum of life imprisonment – meant that Heron could have his choice of counsel.
Judge MacAskill remanded him in custody for another video-link appearance on April 9 for the change of counsel.
He has entered no pleas to any of the charges.
