Two more men have been charged over an alleged serious assault in Christchurch Men’s Prison on March 31.
Riapo Piripi Tipene, aged 18, and Raymie Sulupo, 23, both appeared in the Christchurch District Court yesterday charged with assaulting a man with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
It involves the same victim for which Terence Junior Whaanga, 25, appeared in court two weeks ago and has now been remanded in custody to appear at a case review hearing on June 15. He has denied the charge.
Judge Stephen O’Driscoll remanded Tipene and Sulupo in custody without plea to May 11, for an appearance at court by video-link from the prison. Duty lawyer Clare Yardley asked for the remand for both men to arrange lawyers and get legal advice.
The man allegedly assaulted was a sentenced prisoner. He was taken to hospital but released back to the prison that night.
