Court House-Sept-2013-08A psychiatric report on a man’s fitness to stand trial has been ordered in a case involving allegations over a violent road rage incident in North Canterbury.

The 51-year-old man has already been remanded to Hillmorton Hospital for a report under the Criminal Procedures (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act.

That report has now been completed, but defence counsel Michael Starling asked for a new report on the man’s fitness to stand trial when he appeared in court again today. Judge Stephen O’Driscoll granted the request and remanded the man to May 7, without plea.

The man is alleged to have driven at and run over a father who was out walking with his family near the Eyre River, in Eyreton, on March 23, after being signalled to slow down as he drove past the group. He is also alleged to have run down the family’s dog which had to be euthanised.

He faces charges of assault, driving with excess breath-alcohol, careless driving, injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and cruel treatment of an animal.

Name suppression, which had been lifted, was reimposed today.
