More sex allegations against bus driver

Court House-general2Bail has been refused for a Christchurch bus driver who faced 17 more sex charges at an appearance in the Christchurch District Court today.

The new charges were laid this week against 63-year-old Robert Selwyn Burrett, a month after he had appeared in court on three sex charges.

A suppression order on the detail of the charges was continued by Judge Stephen O’Driscoll today.

Burrett was held briefly in custody and then released on bail after his first appearance on the original three charges at the end of March.

Police indicated at that stage that their inquiries were continuing and that has led to the additional charges.

Judge Farish granted the man bail with a series of strict conditions a month ago. Burrett had to live at a specified address and is now allowed any contact with children under 16 unless accompanied by his wife, who has been in court at each appearance. He was banned from contacting employees of a company and parents and children who might be part of the police investigation.

Judge Farish ordered him not to apply for travel documents, and lifted the name suppression that had applied for the first week after his arrest.

Since then he has indicated not guilty pleas on the first three charges and had been remanded for a case review hearing in two months, and defence counsel Rupert Glover said today that Burrett pleaded not guilty to all the new charges and also elected trial by jury.

Judge O’Driscoll refused to grant bail, and all charges are now remanded to June 22.

Details of discussion at bail hearings are automatically suppressed.
