Suppression blanket over child porn prosecution
Suppression covers all details of a professional man charged with possession of child pornography images, after legal argument in the Christchurch District Court.
The man was given a registrar’s remand to reappear in court on July 23. This meant that he did not appear in court today, even when the case was called before a judge to settle the outstanding name suppression issue.
Judge Stephen O’Driscoll heard submissions from defence counsel Grant Tyrrell and then said he would grant interim suppression but the issue would have to fully argued with fresh material placed before the court for the man’s next appearance.
Mr Tyrrell had argued that the interim order should be granted because of hardship.
Judge O’Driscoll suppressed the name, details, and occupation because he said publication of the man’s occupation would create speculation amongst others in that occupation.
The charges say that the man had possession of 28 images while overseas in 2013.
The charges describe the individual images in detail. The images sometimes involve more than one child, or “early to mid-teen” children, and show sexual activity taking place.
The charges allege the man had possession of the images knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that they were objectionable.
