Women in custody over pellet gun incident

Court House-entranceTwo women being held in custody are denying any role in an alleged pellet-gun robbery in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Bail was refused for Shannon Caroline Hammond, 23, a mother employed as a gib fixer, whose address was given by the police as “no fixed abode”.

Hammond said at her bail hearing in the Christchurch District Court that she had accommodation available in Hornby.

Hammond did not enter a plea, but defence counsel Richard McGuire said she would be defending the charge. She also faces two unrelated charges of theft, and a breach of bail.

Judge Jane Farish refused bail and remanded Hammond to appear by video-link from the prison on Monday morning.

Pauline Ngapiki Herewini, 31, a mother, was also refused bail but Judge Farish said an application for her release on electronically monitored bail could be heard on August 20.

Defence counsel Craig Ruane said Herewini denied the charge and elected trial by jury. September 28 was set for her case review hearing.

The women are jointly charged with using a firearm to commit a theft – a charge that Judge Farish referred to in court as aggravated robbery.

Police allege a woman was threatened with a pellet gun outside an address in Belfast about 2.15am and her handbag was taken.
