Street fight was to ‘defend brother’
A 17-year-old has been sentenced to five months home detention after using excessive force trying to defend his brother in a street brawl.
Caleb Whaanga was sentenced in the Christchurch District Court on a charge of assault with a weapon after the incident in Holland Street in Dallington in November. He had pleaded guilty.
Judge Jane Farish said Whaanga tried to protect two victims who were being attacked, by trying to get them indoors, but the front door had been locked by the occupants.
One of the female occupants ran to a neighbour to get help, but the people from that address were also attacked.
Whaanga’s victim received his injury when he was hit over the head with a piece of wood while Whaanga was trying to protect his brother.
The man bled from a cut across the back of his head, and now has a large scar and suffers headaches.
Judge Farish said this was Whaanga’s first offence and his pre-sentence report said he was a low risk of re-offending.
She sentenced him to home detention, with six months of post detention conditions to undertake treatment or counselling directed by his probation officer to address violence issues.
