Bail refused for murder accused
Thirty-four-year-old Redwood labourer James Stedman Roberts, charged with the murder of his autistic step-son, was declined bail in the High Court in Christchurch today.
Roberts was charged after five-year-old Leon Michael leFleming Jayet-Cole died in Christchurch Hospital with serious head injuries.
The hearing was before Justice Rachel Dunningham, who removed a non-association clause, allowing his wife Emma Le Fleming Roberts, 37, to contact Roberts, and visit him in prison.
Emma Roberts faces a charge that on May 27, having the care of Leon, she failed to discharge her duty to seek medical treatment for him which the charge says was “a major departure from the standard of care to be expected of a reasonable person”. She has pleaded not guilty.
James Roberts denies the charge of murder and is remanded in custody to a case review hearing in the High Court on September 11.
