Bail hearings after car chase arrests
Bail was refused for one of two drivers arrested after alleged car chases with police in the city’s northern suburbs on Monday.
The bail hearings were held when the pair – arrested for alleged driving offences in separate cars that had been unlawfully taken – appeared before Judge Brian Callaghan in the Christchurch District Court today.
Police opposed bail in both cases.
Police allege one driver rammed a police car before speeding off and the other car failed to stop when it was noticed that it was following the police chase. The second car was driven over a traffic island at the corner of Briggs Road and Innes Road before crashing into another vehicle.
Police say that members of the public found that driver hiding in a ditch.
Brandon Alan Niven, 20, was remanded on bail without plea to September 8.
Niven was charged with unlawfully taking a $2500 Nissan Cefiro car overnight on Sunday-Monday, and then driving while forbidden, failing to stop for the police while driving dangerously, and reckless driving on Hills Road.
During the remand, Niven is not allowed to drive, is subject to a nighttime curfew at his Phillipstown address, and is not allowed to contact the other alleged offender.
Ryan Victor DeSouza, 22, a gib fixer, was remanded in custody without plea to September 10, on charges of unlawfully taking a $2000 car, failing to stop for a police car using its lights and siren, driving while forbidden, dangerous driving on Innes Road, and failing to stop after a non-injury accident.
