Eight bailed on rioting charges
Eight people charged with rioting in a gang confrontation in an Ashburton Park on Thursday afternoon were granted registrar’s remands after being arrested and transported to Christchurch.
The eight were brought to the Christchurch District Court where a registrar remanded them all on bail to the Ashburton District Court on September 29 on the unusual charge, to get legal advice in the meantime.
Ten people were arrested in the incident at park in Davis Crescent about 3.45pm, when members of rival Black Power and Mongrel Mob gangs allegedly fought with bats, an axe, and sticks.
Two of those arrested were transported to the Timaru District Court.
Those granted bail from the Christchurch Court House were Breeze Hunt-Weston, 22, Emitana Reece Aranui, 30, Maria Aranui, 23, Mahaki Hemi Aranui, 26, a labourer, Chase Aranui, 22, Malia Veatupu, 26, Larissa Huriwai, 33, and William Kiteanga Kimiia, 26. All are from Netherby, Ashburton District.
They are charged jointly with rioting by being part of a group of six or more people who “acting together were using violence against persons to the alarm of persons in the neighbourhood”.
No pleas have been entered.
