Pair in court on assault charges
A man and a woman each facing three Crimes Act assault charges have been remanded in custody for a week at the Christchurch District Court.
Alvin Ritesh Kumar, a 32-year-old factory hand from Woolston, and Stephanie Jane McGrath, 25, from Hornby, were remanded without plea to September 7, by Judge Stephen O’Driscoll.
Defence counsel Phillip Allan applied for bail for both of them, but after hearing submissions the judge refused bail and remanded both in custody.
Each faces charges of assaulting two men and a woman. The charges relate to an incident at an address in Johns Road late on Sunday night.
Crimes Act charges are laid in more serious assault cases. In this case, the police allege the two men suffered wounds to their heads and shoulders and needed hospital treatment.
