Police-badge-2013-09-001A 29-year-old builder has admitted two assaults on police officers who were arresting him at The Palms Shopping Centre in June.

Teatawai Floyd Meechang pleaded guilty to two aggravated assault charges in the Christchurch District Court today, and police withdrew one charge of resisting police.

The police summary of facts said Meechang was approached by the two police officers after he was identified as being sought in relation to a domestic incident.

He became agitated and uncooperative, and ran away from the officers. He then turned and punched one constable in the left cheek, and then in the jaw. The constable was dazed and dropped to his knee.

Meechang then punched the other constable to the side of his face, and ran away again, but stumbled and fell into a bush, and was arrested.

One policeman received bruising to his left ear, swelling to his left jaw and cheek. He had scratch marks on his neck, and a sore face. The other policeman received a cut to the left side of his face, with swelling and pain. His wrist and hand were grazed during the arrest.

Meechang also faces charges of driving while disqualified, wilful damage, and theft.

Judge Paul Kellar remanded him on bail to October 6 for pleas on the three remaining charges.
