Teenager denies murder charge
A 16-year-old charged with the murder of an 87-year-old man at Upper Riccarton has pleaded not guilty in the High Court at Christchurch.
The young person will stay in the youth justice facility at Te Puna Wai, Rolleston, until turning 17 in October when there will be a transfer to a youth wing at Christchurch Prison.
The accused originally appeared in the Youth Court where suppression covered all details, including the gender. The case has been transferred to the High Court for the first time today and Justice Cameron Mander continued the suppression order until the next appearance at a case review hearing on October 23.
Harold Richardson was found dead at his Owens Terrace property in Upper Riccarton in early August.
Jonathan Eaton QC appeared as defence counsel for today’s High Court appearance; Claire Boshier for the Crown.
