Fourth gang member admits street brawl charges

Court House-07A fourth man arrested for assaults after a gang street brawl in Avonside last November has admitted two charges in the Christchurch District Court before his trial was due to start.

Tabekka Whaanga, a 23-year-old gardener, pleaded guilty to a charge of injuring with intent to injure, and a charge of using terracotta pots as a weapon.

The charges arose from a confrontation between four members of the “Badways” street gang who had been drinking heavily, and two men at a Holland Street address.

The first victim of the assault was punched to the ground, then punched and kicked in the face, head, and body. He escaped the beating, and another victim ran out of the house to his aid. There was then a fight involving a baseball bat, a pipe, a spade, and terracotta pots. A neighbour who came to help the two men was also injured in the fighting.

The three other men charged were 18-year-old Caleb Whaanga, 21-year-old Cameron Tony Meadows, and 20-year-old Taua McLean, two of whom have already been dealt with by the court.

Judge Jane Farish remanded Whaanga on bail to November 25, to be sentenced at the same time as Meadows. She asked for a pre-sentence report to be prepared, including a report to assess Whaanga’s suitability for a home detention sentence, and an updated victim impact report.
