High Court-panoply1The trial of the man accused of two murders and two attempted murders at the Ashburton WINZ offices last year has been set to begin on February 22.

The trial of Russell John Tully, 49, had been set to commence at the High Court in Christchurch today, but it was decided it would have to be adjourned at a hearing before Justice Cameron Mander last week.

No new trial date had been settled then, but it has been announced with the release of Justice Mander’s written decision today.
All the submissions and discussions at last week’s hearing were suppressed but the judge today allowed media to report the new trial date, and that “the reason for the adjournment is to accommodate Mr Tully’s legal representation at the trial”.

Tully is accused of murdering Peggy Turuhira Noble and Susan Leigh Cleveland in a shooting at the WINZ office in Ashburton on September 1, 2014, and the attempted murder of two other WINZ employees. He has pleaded not guilty.

At last week’s hearing he appeared by video-link from Christchurch Men’s Prison.

The trial is set to last three weeks.
