Community sentence for street brawl

Dallington-101The last man to be dealt with for his part in a Dallington street brawl has received a sentence of community detention and intensive supervision, in the Christchurch District Court.

Tabekka Whaanga was one of four alcohol-fuelled men who attacked two victims at a property on Holland Street in November 2014.

Whaanga was sentenced on charges of injuring with intent to injure, and assault with a weapon.

Tebekka and his co-offenders, Cameron Tony Meadows, 21, Caleb Whaanga, 18, and Taua Te Tauhou McLean, 21 had confronted a man in the yard at the address, where he was punched and kicked before a second person, who was also injured, came to his aid.

The pair got inside the address, but a neighbour who came to help was also attacked by the men.

The three victims were treated for bruising, swelling, and one required stitches to his head.

Judge Jane Farish sentenced Whaanga to six months’ community detention, and 18 months’ intensive supervision with judicial monitoring.

He will have a curfew from 8pm to 6am, and she recommended he attend a rehabilitation course for alcohol abuse, and a parenting course.
