Court House-general2An 18-year-old has been jailed and given a life-time ban from owning animals after being sentenced on two charges of ill-treating animals.

Christchurch District Court Judge Jane Farish said she didn’t want to put any more animals at risk, and ordered forfeiture to the SPCA of any animals Smoor owned now.

He was also sentenced on four charges of assaulting a woman, and damaging a bus.

Logan Smoor was left in charge of a cross-breed puppy named Kia while his father was overseas. When his father returned he found the puppy in distress and took it to the SPCA. The puppy had 11 fractures, two to its lower jaw, head and rib fractures, and three of his legs were fractured. The right eye was sightless, and it was starving.

The veterinarian said the puppy would have been in pain, and could not have been given food or water by Smoor, as it was able to eat at the clinic. The puppy had to be destroyed to end its suffering.

Smoor also admitted killing his pet rat by slamming it into its cage, where it died instantly.

Judge Farish issued a protection order for a woman, who at various times had been slapped, burnt with a lighter, punched, and scratched with a knife by Smoor.

Smoor had damaged the windows of a bus, saying that the driver had been speeding and he thought it would show him he was breaking the law.

Judge Farish said Smoor’s psychiatric reports said he had a specific learning disability, poor relationship skills, and showed aggressive behaviour towards others. It said he would not be capable of living independently.

Judge Farish said she had no option but to send Smoor to prison, and sentenced him to 15 months prison, and reparation for the bus of $2676.

She said she was concerned about his inability to change, and urged to prison authorities to suppy Smoor with one-one-one counselling.

She imposed release conditions that he undertake assessment, treatment, or counselling as recommended by his parole officer.
