Shirley-101A 74-year-old man is denying two charges of indecently assaulting women and has elected trial before a judge-alone.

Sheragha Ahmadi, of Mairehau, was remanded on bail to a case review hearing on May 3 when he made an appearance before Judge Tony Couch in the Christchurch District Court yesterday.

Ahmadi was arrested in February on a charge of indecently assaulting a woman who was walking on Shirley Road about 9am on a weekday. He was arrested by police soon afterwards, further along Shirley Road.

Since his remand on that charge, the police have laid a second charge alleging an indecent assault on a second woman in Christchurch on December 7.

Defence counsel Allister Davis said Ahmadi was pleading not guilty to both charges.

He also asked Judge Couch to grant interim name suppression because of Ahmadi’s ill-health. He said Ahmadi had been taken to the cardiology unit after his last court appearance.

Judge Couch ruled out suppression after being told that the name had already been publicised when Ahmadi was first granted a registrar’s remand last month, on The Press website and the Christchurch Court News website.
