Tourist driver charged over death

Court House-general2A Chinese tourist driver has been charged over the death of a woman passenger after allegedly crashing off a cliff near Twizel last Saturday.

Jing Huang, 36, of Dongcheng District, in Beijing, was given a registrar’s remand to Monday to get legal advice when the case was called at the Christchurch District Court today.

He has entered no plea to a charge of careless driving on the Mount Cook Station Road causing the death of Jing Jing Luo.

Police said after the crash that it appeared the driver had lost control on a gravel road and the car had gone over a cliff, then rolled several times before coming to rest half-submerged in Lake Pukaki.

The woman passenger was thrown from the vehicle and was found dead at the scene. The driver was taken to hospital with broken bones.
