Court House from Victoria Sq-101A 50-year-old Redwood man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court on 65 charges of obtaining money totalling $91,850 by deception.

Police opposed bail for Kim Michael David Barwell, listed as a labourer, when he appeared before Judge Bridget Mackintosh in the Christchurch District Court.

The charges allege offending over several months during 2015 with amounts ranging from $220 to $5400.

The charges do not refer to the name of the victim but it is understood to be an 82-year-old man who had handed over the money in a series of “cash loans” to pay for food, car repairs, medication for his partner, tuition for a heavy vehicle licence, and funeral costs.

Judge Mackintosh declined Barwell’s bail application, and remanded him in custody without plea to April 14, when he will appear by video-link from the Christchurch Men’s prison.
