October date set for child murder trial
October 31 has been set for the trial James Stedman Roberts, charged with the murder of his five-year-old stepson Leon Michael leFleming Jayet-Cole.
The date was confirmed by Justice Cameron Mander at a pre-trial conference with the Crown and defence in the High Court at Christchurch today.
Roberts, a 35-year-old labourer from Redwood, has denied the charge of murdering the autistic boy on May 27, 2015.
The police said at the time that Leon had received multiple injuries, including head injuries, and died after his admission to hospital.
Roberts was held in custody after his arrest in June but was released on electronically monitored bail in December.
The trial is expected to last three weeks.
