Further deception charge laid against Kim Barwell
A charge of deceiving a woman out of $220 has been laid against a Christchurch man already facing 65 dishonesty charges.
The new charge was laid when Kim Michael David Barwell, a 50-year-old labourer from Redwood, appeared in the Christchurch District Court today.
Barwell was refused bail when he first appeared in court on April 14 and he was appearing today by video-link from the prison.
Barwell is charged with obtaining $91,850 by deception from an 82-year-old man who had allegedly handed over the money to him in a series of “cash loans” to pay for good, car repairs, medication for his partner, tuition for a heavy vehicle licence, and funeral costs.
Since publicity about those charges, police have been approached by a parishioner at St Gregory’s Parish Centre, Bishopdale, who alleged she had been told a tale of hardship including being unable to pay for groceries and drove to a cash machine to get $220 for Barwell.
Defence counsel Linda Drummond today told Judge Brian Callaghan that the police had provided a computer disk containing hundreds of documents relating to the charges and she wanted to examine that before discussing the case with Barwell. She asked for a remand.
Judge Callaghan remanded Barwell in custody on all charges for another appearance by video link on April 21.
He has entered no pleas to any charges.
