Son’s $57,000 raid on mother’s bank account
A 19-year-old Rangiora man who drained $57,830 from his mother’s bank account has admitted a charge of obtaining the money by deception.
Ryan Spencer Billington, a labourer, told police he intended to purchase a house with the money and then return it to the account before his mother knew it was missing.
Instead, Christchurch District Court Judge Tony Couch remanded him on bail to August 23 for sentencing and an assessment of his suitability for a home detention sentence.
Billington admitted a representative charge of taking the money from the account on many occasions between August and December.
The police said Billington’s mother had moved to Britain and he had helped her by setting up a telephone banking account so that she could continue to have access.
Billington had no authority to transfer money from the account, but he knew his mother’s ID and PIN numbers.
He began by transferring small amounts between $30 and $100 but after the first month he began transferring up to $5000.
A total of $90,070 was transferred but some was a loan for a house deposit and some was to pay for flights. The police said $57,830 had been obtained by deception. When interviewed, Billington admitted he had transferred the money unlawfully.
