Remands for Ashburton gang brawl accused

Court House-general2Nine people arrested for a gang brawl in Ashburton on June 18 live at the same address, and police allege they are all affiliated to the same gang.

Jimmy James Aranui, 48, Shona Marie Thompson, 49, Emitana Reece Aranui, 31, Mahaki Hemi Aranui, 27, Billy Davis Aranui, 26, Harley Aranui 25, Chase Aranui, 23, Maria Aranui, 23, and Breeze Hunt-Weston,  23, have been charged with at least one of the injuries, or assaults, on four men.

Two of the women have been charged with damaging a victim’s car.

Police allege the gang attacked two men with sticks and a wheel brace, and members of the public intervened.

Police said this was the third incident in recent times involving two groups, but there were no serious injuries.

Christchurch District Court Judge John Macdonald remanded Billy Davis Aranui in custody for a video-link appearance from the Christchurch Men’s Prison on July 7.

Judge Raoul Neave remanded Jimmy, Emitana, Chase, and Maria Aranui in custody to June 24 for police to check possible bail addresses if bail is granted.

He remanded Mahaki and Harley Aranui in custody to June 29 for bail applications, and Breeze Hunt-Weston and Shona Thompson were bailed to appear in the Ashburton District Court on July 18.
