Post boxes-23-01A 34-year-old Avondale woman charged with rural mail thefts has been banned from going to the Selwyn and Waimakariri Districts while she is on bail on remand.

She was remanded without plea at the Christchurch District Court today, while police consider whether another charge will be laid.

Anna Leigh Hunter was arrested last week when police said they believed mail had been stolen from letterboxes across Canterbury. They believed they had recovered most of the missing mail.

Hunter appeared before Judge Brian Callaghan and was remanded on bail to November 1.

While on remand she has to live at a specified address, not drive, and not go to Selwyn and Waimakariri Districts. She is charged with mail thefts in West Melton, Kaiapoi, and Christchurch between September 28 and October 10.

Duty lawyer Moana Cole asked for the remand for Hunter to get legal advice.

She said in the meantime the police were considering whether to lay a charge of theft totalling more than $1000.
