Sword used in taxi confrontation
A man who ran off without paying his taxi fare and then confronted the driver while holding a sword, was sentenced to community work and supervision in the Christchurch District Court.
Marshall Barry Smith, 29, was the passenger in the taxi early in the morning on July 17. He left the taxi without paying when it reached his home, and hit the side of the car, causing a small dent
The taxi driver knocked on Smith’s door, and Smith opened it holding a sword. The driver drove off down the street with Smith chasing him, still holding the sword.
The police arrived and found Smith in his bedroom, where there were two large grow-tents.
They found eight large cannabis plants, 20 smaller ones, heat lamps, power sockets, extractor fans, and fertilising products.
Smith pleaded guilty today at a case review hearing after initially denying the charges.
Judge Tony Couch sentenced Smith on charges of wilful damage, possession of a weapon, and cultivating cannabis to 100 hours’ community work, 10 months’ supervision. He also ordered Smith to pay $1000 emotional harm payment and $517.50 reparation for losses and damage, to the taxi driver.
