Police allege pellet gun used in robbery
A 17-year-old Sydenham youth has been granted bail after his arrest on a charge of using a pellet gun to rob four people walking in the street.
Police did not oppose bail for Chinyanta Mfwembe Chinyanta when he appeared in the Christchurch District Court before Community Magistrate Leigh Langridge.
Police allege he is one of two occupants who got out of a car that pulled to a stop ahead of four people who were walking along Fairview Street in Somerfield about 12.30am on Wednesday.
The charge is that Chinyanta was armed with a pellet gun, which appeared to be an offensive weapon, when he robbed the walkers – a woman and three men – of cellphones and a speaker.
He was remanded without plea to appear again on February 14.
At the request of the police, Magistrate Langridge imposed conditions that he has to live at a particular address, abide by a night-time curfew, and not contact the victims.
Police say a second person aged 15 has been jointly charged. He was listed to make an appearance in the Youth Court today.
