A Woolston man will have facial scarring for life after he was bitten by a prowler he found outside his home.

The prowler, Simon Barry Sekai, 29, has now been recalled to prison to serve more of an earlier armed robbery sentence. He was out on parole soon after release, when he committed the assault.

He appeared by video-link from Christchurch Men’s Prison today and pleaded guilty to charges of wounding the householder with intent to injure, and being unlawfully in the yard of the house.

Police told Judge Alistair Garland that Sekai was drunk in Hargood Street, Woolston, at 9.25pm on December 9, when he walked up a driveway to a house on a back section.

The householder who was attacked, lives in the house with his wife and two young children.

The wife heard Sekai outside and saw his head at the window.

The husband then went outside, but could not see anyone so he called out.

Sekai yelled back, “Who the f— are you?”

The man could see the prowler was stumbling and appeared drunk. He asked if he needed help.

Sekai responded by punching him in the chin.

The man called to his wife to call the police, but Sekai began to follow her inside.

Fearing for his family, the man grabbed Sekai and pushed him to the ground. In the struggle that followed, Sekai punched him several times, rolled him onto his back, and bit into his right cheek.

The man had to force his fingers into Sekai’s mouth to release the bite.

Police said the man would have permanent scarring from the bite which left an open wound on his cheek, and he also had bruises and scratches, a haematoma to the left eye, and a chipped tooth.

Judge Garland remanded Sekai in custody for sentencing on April 5, and asked for a pre-sentence report. The case was also referred to restorative justice to see if a meeting could be arranged between Sekai and the man he bit, before the sentencing.
