Deer poaching denied
A man has pleaded not guilty to poaching a stag allegedly shot on private property at Waiau, North Canterbury.
George Stuart Aitken, a 27-year-old pest control worker from Waikari, was allegedly hunting with Darrell Maurice Smith, a 53-year-old shearer, on Windford Hills Station on March 29.
They were both charged with killing a wild animal on private land without the authority of the occupier of the land.
The men had permission to be on DOC land, but had allegedly wandered onto the private property when they crossed a river.
The manager of the station was also hunting when he heard gunshots within the boundary, and called police.
Smith was fined $1000 when he pleaded guilty on May 10, and today Aitken denied the charge and was given a registrar’s remand to appear at a case review hearing on August 29.
