Injuring charge laid in homicide investigation

A 50-year-old has been charged with wounding 25-year-old Shayne George Heappey, who died after being taken wounded to Christchurch Hospital at the weekend.

Police have an on-going investigation into the death of the young father, but in the meantime a man charged with wounding him has been remanded in custody to January 11, when he may appear by video-link.

At his appearance in a closed courtroom at the Christchurch District Court today, Judge Joanna Maze granted the man interim name suppression at the request of duty lawyer Clare Yardley.

Police supported the suppression while the investigation was continuing. Mrs Yardley told the court: “The police inquiry is fluid and the charge is liekly to be upgraded. Other persons of interest are being interviewed or investigated.”

She said the man could appear by video-link on January 11, or could be brought to court to appear in person if he wished.

The man has entered no plea to a charge of wounding Mr Heappey with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
