Custody remand on kidnap, robbery charges

A Rangiora man arrested on charges of aggravated robbery and kidnapping in an incident in Rolleston at the end of January was remanded in custody in the Christchurch District Court today.

William Hewinson, a 23-year-old concrete worker, is jointly charged with three other people for stealing four firearms, a wallet, a cell phone, and a car from a man they allegedly unlawfully detained on January 28.

Today Hewinson was charged with a burglary of an address in Rolleston on January 27, aggravated robbery, kidnapping, unlawful possession of a firearm on January 28, unlawfully in possession of a shotgun on January 31, and receiving twol stolen cars between November 2018 and January 2019 in Rangiora.

Judge Tony Couch remanded Hewinson in custody until a bail hearing on February 14.

The police have said Hewinson was a Black Power member, and two other 23-year-old men, and one 21-year-old woman have been charged with the same offending.

The victim of the kidnapping is recovering from the injuries he received, they said.
