Custody remand after alleged nightclub bashing

A 25-year-old man has been remanded in custody after an alleged bashing at the Calendar Girls nightclub in Christchurch early on Sunday.

Apirana Ropata Ngata, a shearer from Phillipstown, faces a charge of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to Jacob Leo Skilling.

Mr Skilling was admitted to the intensive care unit with critical injuries after the alleged assault at the nightclub and bar in Victoria Street, central Christchurch.

Defence counsel Kerry Cook sought bail for Ngata when he appeared before Judge Tony Couch in the Christchurch District Court this afternoon.

Judge Couch heard submissions and considered the police opposition to bail document and then decided against granting bail. Details of submissions at bail hearings are suppressed under the Bail Act.

He remanded Ngata in custody to appear by video-link at court on July 12.

No plea has been entered.
