High Court sentencing for teenager who admits two rapes
September 11
Event Navigation
9.15am sentencing in the High Court at which the Crown will argue that a sentence of preventive detention should be imposed for an 18-year-old from Loburn, in rural North Canterbury, who has admitted the rape of a 17-year-old woman in a car near Christchurch Airport, and then the abduction of an 11-year-old girl from a playground a few hours later, and her rape. He was arrested after a police pursuit which ended when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a power pole. He pleaded guilty on November 14. His name is suppressed. A scheduled sentencing on February 5 was delayed at the Crown’s request so that two health assessors’ reports could be obtained to consider whether an open-ended sentence of preventive detention should be sought. The Crown then went ahead with that request, and Judge David Saunders declined jurisdiction in the District Court on July 11 and sent the case for sentencing in the High Court.
