Car used as weapon, police say

Five charges of assault using a car as a weapon have been laid against a man arrested after a domestic-violence incident in Hills Road, Christchurch, on Saturday evening.

They are among 18 charges the man faced during a brief appearance in the Christchurch District Court today.

Police allege Cody Derek Martin, a 23-year-old labourer, smashed into an ambulance where his victim was being treated.

They said he then rammed a police car which had pursued him along Lower Styx Road and Marshland Road by driving backwards into it several times.

On the last smash, the car was said to have become entangled with the patrol car. Police said Martin then ran off.

When police chased him, he allegedly threatened to kill them with a baseball bat.

He has been charged with assault arising from the domestic incident, two charges of assault with a baseball bat, five charges of assault with a motor vehicle, three charges of resisting arrest, reckless driving, driving with excess alcohol, failing to stop for police, two charges of threatening to kill, breach of bail, and intentional damage of a fence.

Judge Jane McMeeken remanded him in custody to March 17.
